Solomon McCown Survey Says: Imus Had to Go

Shock Jock Firing was Right Thing to do

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sixty percent of Boston area business men and women queried believe that firing Don Imus for his racial comments about the Rutgers womens basketball team was the right move according to a survey released today by Solomon McCown & Company, a public relations firm specializing in strategic communications and crisis management.

An organizations reputation is its most valuable asset, said Ashley McCown, executive vice president, Solomon McCown & Company. Had CBS waited much longer to jettison Imus, the network would have run the risk of permanently damaging its credibility, she added.

McCown, along with Dave Yas of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, Scott Harshbarger of Proskauer Rose, Dr. Erika James of the University of Virginias Darden School, and The Boston Globes Joe Sullivan, will tackle the Imus incident as part of a discussion on April 26th, Take 2: After the Apology, How to Leverage a Second Chance (http://www.solomonmccown.com/take2/).

Don Imus and Howard Stern have spent years one-upping each other on the racial and sexual insensitivity meter without serious consequences. So why did Imus take the fall this time? With the simulcast on MSNBC, Imus crossed over to mainstream television and had a large viewing audience, McCown continued. CBS and NBC employees and the networks advertisers sent a clear message that Don Imus racial comments were inconsistent with their valuesa message that could not be ignored.
