WEET

The Work Enhancement Employment Team (WEET) was formed in 1996 as a joint effort between the Veteran’s Administration and the State of Nevada Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. The objective was to bring together a group of outside businesses and other organizations to further employment efforts on behalf of the disabled.

MISSION STATEMENT

W.E.E.T. partners with federal, state and local agencies and private corporations in bringing employers in Southern Nevada together in an effort to create awareness of the outstanding abilities of individuals with disabilities, as well as to educate and guide them in employing, training and empowering able individuals.

WEET FACTS

WEET is a voluntary, community based organization, whose objective is to enhance employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.   WEET promotes skills training and placement assistance into employment commensurate with the individual job seeker’s interests and abilities.   WEET also offers assistance to businesses, which hire persons with disabilities, including:

  • Assistance with meeting recruitment needs.
  • Cost savings incentives, offered through Vocational Rehabilitation, which may include trial work periods, on the job trainings and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit.
  • Information and referrals for businesses with existing employees who have disabilities.
  • Reduction of employer’s fears of hiring qualified applicants with disabilities through education and exposure.

WEET began as collaboration between the VA Medical Center and the Employment Team at Vocational Rehabilitation.  Due to the huge success of this partnership, WEET was expanded to include other federal and local governmental agencies and private sector employers in Southern Nevada.

WEET began the tradition of a yearly awards ceremony and luncheon in 1997.   This ceremony provides WEET the opportunity to recognize several outstanding employees with disabilities as well as two outstanding businesses who have strived to diversify their work place by inclusion of persons with disabilities. This is also an opportunity for businesses to learn more about an untapped segment of our labor force - the employable individual with a disability.  If you would like more information please contact one of the co-chairpersons or a member of the steering committee.
