Promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities

Mission Statement

The Institute for Community Inclusion supports the rights of children and adults with disabilities to participate in all aspects of the community. As practitioners, researchers, and teachers, we form partnerships with individuals, families, and communities. Together we advocate for personal choice, self-determination, and social and economic justice.

  • Employing people with disabilities in community settings
  • Supporting children and young adults with special health care needs
  • Accessing general education, and transition from school to adult life
  • Expanding local recreation and school activities to include people with disabilities
  • Promoting technology that aids participation in school/community/work activities

Danielle Dreilinger

Communications Specialist

B.A., English and psychology, Columbia University

Danielle Dreilinger coordinates editing and marketing for ICI projects, with a focus on reaching "lay" audiences such as employers, consumers, families, grassroots organizations, media. She is the lead writer and editor for ICI websites, which include onestops.info and communityinclusion.org. Danielle also develops the lion's share of marketing materials. As a freelance journalist, she frequently covers Boston-area minority and immigrant affairs. Prior to her current position, Danielle worked in the ICI research department and the publishing field. She earned a bachelor's degree from Columbia University in English and psychology (Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude). Email: danielle.dreilinger@umb.edu

To what extent have changes in philosophy translated into changes for state agencies and the people they serve? This brief analyzes MR/DD agencies' day and employment service trends from 1988 to 1999 and discusses relevant trends in policy and legislation. (7/2001)

Time Limits, Exemption, and Disclosure: TANF Caseworkers and Clients with Disabilities

Findings show that welfare caseworkers experience unique challenges when supporting welfare recipients with disabilities, including time limit pressures and conflict over exemptions. The brief includes a resource list for caseworkers. (11/2000)

More Than Just a Job: Person-Centered Career Planning

Sometimes counselors think that person-centered career planning has to involve a big meeting, or is only for people with the most significant disabilities. The first issue in the new ICI Professional Development Series lays out the principles of listening to job seekers to help them shape and achieve their career goals. (10/2003)

Making Dreams a Reality: Using Personal Networks to Achieve Goals as You Prepare to Leave High School

Leaving high school can be both exciting and stressful. This brief tells the stories of students who used their personal networks to exercise self-determination and follow their goals, and includes worksheets for students to build and use their own networks. (8/2002)

Self-Determination and Struggle in the Lives of Adolescents

As students of all ability levels move into adulthood, they seek to define themselves and develop goals for the future. This study identifies four categories of students and offering targeted suggestions for support. (9/2000)
