The Walk takes place from 7:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Exposition Park.
The creation and announcement of the scholarship is the first of many new initiatives from Farmers in the African-American market.
Farmers has created the scholarship program for deserving California resident students pursing any major and attending one of the 39 United Negro College Fund (UNCF) member institutions or other historically black colleges or universities (HBCUs) in America. This new scholarship is designed to help ensure the continued success of five deserving students, while creating a way to ease the burden of costs associated with attending college.
"We want to encourage and uplift California students attending UNCF and/or HBCUs to let them know that Farmers cares," said Faye W. McClure, Vice President of Strategic Marketing, Farmers. "Farmers strongly believes in education and this is truly evident in our free educational programs - Freedom's Song, The American Promise, The Bronze Screen and Going for Broke. These programs help educators and students by providing valuable lesson plans and learning materials on various social and cultural subjects free of charge."
With so many incoming freshmen having access to a plethora of scholarship, grant and loan opportunities in the latter high school years, Farmers decided to focus on current students that sometimes need that extra boost of funding to stay afloat and rise to greatness. The company recently partnered with the UNCF to give students another opportunity to continue their studies in an already competitive environment.
"The Farmers Insurance Group Emerging Scholars Program is a great addition to our scholarship offerings here at the UNCF," said Renita Tyson, Area Development Director, UNCF. "To see Farmers give back to the community at a grass roots level is a true testament to this company's focus on education."
The Emerging Scholars Program is open on-line from May 19 - August 6, 2007 for the 2007-2008 school year. Five recipients will not only receive a scholarship, but they may also bring one guest to a special reception in Los Angeles, CA, courtesy of Farmers. The reception is part of another series of events in which Farmers is the presenting sponsor of The Angel City Classic, a football game at the Los Angeles Coliseum between North Carolina A&T and Prairie View A&M.
