| The Hartford Teams Up With Coaches vs. Cancer to Support Cancer Research, Education and Advocacy The Hartfords support of Coaches vs. Cancer highlights significant progress made in the fight against cancer in recent years NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After decades of research, advances in detection and innovative new treatments, more battles are being won every day in the fight against cancer. Recent numbers issued from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) indicate the substantial progress being made against cancer on many fronts: 20 percent more women are surviving breast cancer as compared to 15 years ago; nine out of 10 men who contract prostate cancer live at least 10 years after diagnosis, as compared to two decades ago when one in two died within 10 years, according to 2005 NCI data. To help extend the winning streak against these diseases, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: HIG) is announcing an important sponsorship of Coaches vs. Cancer to support cancer research, education and advocacy. At the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic last night in New York Citys Madison Square Garden, The Hartford formally presented a check in the amount of $175,000 to Coaches vs. Cancer, a nationwide collaboration by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the American Cancer Society (ACS). Coaches vs. Cancer taps the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of college basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness, promote healthy living, raise money and promote advocacy programs. Coaches vs. Cancer has raised more than $29 million since its inception in 1993. The Hartford is proud to join Coaches vs. Cancer in their efforts to fight cancer, said Michael Kalen, executive vice president and director of The Hartfords individual life division. The fine work by Coaches vs. Cancer aligns perfectly with The Hartfords efforts to make life insurance more widely available to cancer survivors and recognizes the remarkable strides being made to beat this disease. Earlier this year, The Hartford became the first life insurer in the nation to offer life insurance to certain men age 60 and older who had been treated for moderate levels of prostate cancer at the same prices as other healthy men their age. Six months earlier, The Hartford became the first life insurer to offer life insurance to certain women age 40 and older who have been treated for early stages of breast cancer at the same prices as other healthy women their age. Previously, men and women treated for these diseases would have to pay significantly more for coverage or would be denied coverage. Coaches vs. Cancer is excited to have the support of an industry leader like The Hartford, said Jim Satalin, national director of the NABC. The Hartfords innovation in insuring cancer survivors highlights the record of achievement by the American Cancer Society and other organizations such as Coaches vs. Cancer in battling this terrible disease. Now, with The Hartfords support, we hope to make further strides. In teaming up with the NABC, The Hartford is also building on its existing relationship with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Hartford is an official corporate partner of the NCAA. In addition, The Hartford worked closely with the NCAA to develop the award-winning Playbook for Life financial literacy program, which provides student-athletes and young adults with information and education on how to manage their personal finances while in college and as they prepare to enter the real world. A free 33-page Playbook for Life guidebook and more information about the program is available at www.playbook.thehartford.com. The Hartford, a Fortune 100 company, is one of the nation's largest financial services and insurance companies, with 2005 revenues of $27.1 billion.
